Montebello, Los Angeles County
The first site of Mission San Gabriel, founded in 1771, lay beside the Rio Hondo in what is now Montebello, before floods forced the mission to move north. A landmark on the bluff above the river marks the Battle of Rio San Gabriel, fought on January 8, 1847. Nearby, the Sanchez Adobe of 1845 is the oldest building in the city.
